This lesson builds the systems that keep both true when something inevitably breaks — a device disconnects, chat turns toxic, or a stranger tries to use your stream to find you. Skip it and your Capstone has no safety net. Complete it and you walk in with a real troubleshooting method and a community you can defend.

Community games, challenges, tournaments, and collabs

Structured formats build belonging faster than gameplay alone:

  • Community games — chat-driven challenges or voting games. Keep rules short and stated before you start.
  • Challenges — self-imposed or chat-voted constraints (item restrictions, no-damage runs, speed goals) with a clearly stated win/fail condition.
  • Tournaments — bracket or point-based competition among viewers or guests. Use the Tournament Run-of-Show to time rounds and avoid dead air.
  • Collabs — co-streaming or in-game teaming with another creator. Agree on moderation, audio routing, and hosting segments before going live, not during.

Moderation — gaming-specific risks

Gaming carries moderation risks general LIVE moderation doesn't fully cover:

  • Mods — assign moderators before you need them; gaming chat can turn toxic fast in competitive moments.
  • Spoilers — set a policy for story-based or competitive games so spoilers don't ruin it for others.
  • Backseat gaming and harassment — decide your tolerance for unsolicited "advice," and enforce boundaries against harassment and slurs immediately.
  • Voice chat risks — teammates may say something harmful on a hot mic; know how to mute or cut a voice source fast.
  • Display names and UGC — opponents or in-game content can contain names you didn't choose; be ready to blur, mute, or scene-switch.
  • Party and in-game chat — not your moderated stream chat; content there can leak in via voice or shared screens.
  • Doxxing and stream-sniping — avoid revealing real-time location data or live match/lobby codes; snipers use exactly that to find you.
  • Private server and account info — never show lobby codes, friend codes, or recovery information on screen.
  • Account security — two-factor codes, recovery emails, and payment info stay off-screen, always.
  • Child safety — if minors appear in voice, party chat, or as guests, apply extra caution with personal information.
  • Toxic competition — model healthy competitiveness; don't let "sweat culture" become harassment.
  • Muting/delaying other players — control your own broadcast even when you can't control teammates.
  • Reporting — know your in-platform reporting options for harassment or unsafe behavior, and use them.
  • Scene-switch for sensitive moments — a fast cut to backup is a legitimate tool, not an admission of failure.

Gaming-specific growth

Growth in gaming follows the same durable principles as the rest of StreamerU: consistency in game/format choice beats chasing every trending title; clips from your own sessions are the most authentic discovery material; structured collabs introduce you to adjacent audiences; and community formats give viewers a reason to return on a schedule instead of "maybe something happens."

Ethical monetization boundaries

No gift-guilt: never frame gifts as proof of loyalty or make silence after a request feel like a viewer's failure. No ranking-as-worth: your rank, K/D, or win rate is a game statistic, not a measure of your value as a creator or a person — and it should never be framed that way to your audience.

Troubleshooting decision trees

Work every failure with the same diagnostic order: source → routing → device → software → performance → network. Change one variable at a time, and switch to your fallback scene rather than troubleshooting blind when one exists.

Video/capture failures

  • *Game Capture black screen* — confirm the game window is foregrounded; try Window Capture as a fallback.
  • *Window Capture missing the game* — confirm the exact window/process; relaunch after the game restarts.
  • *Display Capture privacy* — shows your entire screen including notifications; use it last, notifications disabled.
  • *Capture card not detected* — check cable seating, USB bandwidth, and drivers before assuming hardware failure.
  • *HDMI passthrough fail* — confirm passthrough is enabled and the cable is on the correct output.
  • *Mobile mirror disconnect/overheat* — see GM-09; switch to USB mirroring or a native fallback.
  • *Cropped/unreadable vertical feed* — rebuild the crop against the real canvas, not a stretched capture.

Audio failures

  • *Missing game or mic audio* — check Advanced Audio Properties and capture mode per source.
  • *Discord/alerts doubled* — a duplicate route is almost always two sources capturing the same signal; remove one.
  • *No audio in LIVE Studio* — confirm the mic/device is selected inside LIVE Studio itself; OBS selection doesn't carry over.
  • *Voice chat frozen* — confirm the voice app's output device matches your capture source; restart its audio engine.
  • *Video without audio* — sources are often muted independently; check both.
  • *Camera or capture-card delay* — apply a sync offset once you've identified the lagging side.
  • *Party chat missing* — console audio often doesn't reach a capture card automatically; verify your routing.
  • *One-sided audio* — check for a mono/stereo mismatch or a single-channel cable issue.
  • *Bluetooth delay* — wired audio is more reliable than Bluetooth when latency matters.
  • *Soundboard too loud* — normalize clip volume against your mic (see GM-10).

Performance and network failures

  • *GPU/CPU/encoder overload* — lower in-game settings before lowering stream clarity; check background processes.
  • *Rendering lag* — usually GPU-side; reduce visual complexity before assuming a network problem.
  • *Dropped frames / stuttering* — usually an upload/network symptom; test wired if using Wi-Fi.
  • *Stream Deck fail* — check the software connection and profile before assuming hardware fault.

Avoid public blind troubleshooting when a fallback exists

If a fallback exists, use it the moment something breaks, then troubleshoot calmly off-air or with a brief note to chat ("switching to backup while I fix this"). Blind live troubleshooting usually makes both the problem and the viewer experience worse.

Example 1 — Community tournament night. Run-of-show times each bracket round; a mod handles chat while the host commentates; rules stated up front. Fallback scene ready in case a player's capture card disconnects.
