The video path — HDMI in, HDMI out, capture card

Most console capture follows the same chain regardless of console brand:

Console HDMI out → capture card HDMI in → capture card HDMI out (passthrough) → your display → capture card's USB/capture connection → your computer → OBS or LIVE Studio (Video Capture Device source)

The passthrough step matters: a card with no HDMI-out passthrough leaves you streaming blind unless you play by watching only your computer's preview. Confirm your card supports passthrough before treating "no second display" as workable.

Choosing OBS or LIVE Studio for console capture

Add your capture card as a Video Capture Device source inside either OBS (GM-06) or LIVE Studio (GM-05) — the same source type from those lessons, now pointed at a capture card instead of a webcam. Which receiving software you use depends on your existing baseline: add it wherever your working setup already lives. Console capture slots into what you already built, not a new software decision.

Headset complications

Console headsets typically carry your mic and the console's full audio (game sound, voice chat, party chat) in one connection, which causes two problems: commentary buried under game sound, since both travel through the same audio and your capture card's path picks up the mixed result; and an echo, if your headset mic reaches the stream through both the console's audio-out and a separate USB mic connection at once.

Where your setup allows it, separate your mic input from game/console audio at the source — many capture solutions can pull audio directly from the HDMI signal while your headset mic runs on its own connection. Check your capture card's documentation, since this varies by device, and treat "one mixed feed for everything" as the problem to solve, not the default to accept.

Party chat vs game chat — routing and limitations

Capture cards introduce a small processing delay between the console's actual output and what reaches your computer — a slight visual lag through the passthrough, or audio out of sync with the picture on the stream side. Where latency or mixed-audio problems persist, a hardware audio extractor or a chat-link-style solution can solve what software routing alone cannot. Treat these as targeted fixes for a confirmed problem — not a default purchase before you know you need one.

HDCP and protected-output situations

Some content and configurations enforce HDCP (a copy-protection signal) that actively blocks capture — a black screen or error about protected content, not a generic capture failure. If a black screen appears only with certain content or connection orders, suspect HDCP enforcement. Privacy — protect the people you play with
